SHENZHEN, China — Shenzhen Kyozir New Materials Co., Ltd. (Kyozir), a professional dental zirconia block manufacturer and comprehensive CAD/CAM dental solution provider, has published a new technical guide explaining what a zirconia block is actually made of. The guide helps dental laboratories and clinics understand how composition drives the strength, translucency and shade of zirconia restorations.

Zirconium Dioxide (ZrO²) — The Main Structure

Zirconia, also known as zirconium dioxide (ZrO²), is an engineered ceramic in which zirconium exists mainly as Zr&sup4;+ ions and oxygen as O²− ions, forming a stable ionic crystal network. In a dental zirconia block, ZrO² usually accounts for more than 90% of the material and provides high mechanical strength, excellent fracture resistance, chemical stability and proven biocompatibility.

Pure zirconia, however, cannot hold a stable structure at room temperature. As it cools it passes through three crystal phases — monoclinic (up to about 1170°C), tetragonal (about 1170–2370°C) and cubic (above about 2370°C) — and the phase transformation causes roughly 3–5% volume expansion that can crack the material.

Stabilizers — The Key to Reliable Performance

To solve this challenge, manufacturers add stabilizers that lock in the desirable crystal phases. Yttrium oxide (Y²O³), the most widely used stabilizer in dental zirconia, produces yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP), the material family behind most modern zirconia blocks. This is what allows crowns and bridges to survive the stresses of chewing without cracking.

Coloring Agents — From White to Natural Tooth Shades

Zirconia blocks are not naturally tooth-colored. Manufacturers add small amounts of coloring oxides — such as iron oxide (Fe²O³) for warm yellow or brown tones, cerium and praseodymium oxides for shade and brightness adjustment, plus cobalt, chromium and manganese oxides to fine-tune intensity — to reproduce natural dentition.

This is why modern blocks come in two main families:

  • Monochromatic zirconia blocks: one uniform shade throughout, offering simple processing for standard restorations.
  • Multilayer zirconia blocks: multiple color and translucency gradients that imitate natural tooth structure — the cervical area delivers higher strength and deeper color while the incisal area provides higher translucency for a lifelike appearance.
Minor Additives — Fine-Tuning Processing and Stability

Beyond ZrO² and stabilizers, trace additives optimize the material:

  • Aluminum oxide (Al²O³): controls grain growth, improves strength and enhances aging resistance.
  • Sintering aids (SiO², TiO²): improve densification and optimize sintering behavior.
  • Organic binders: temporary agents that help zirconia powder form into block shapes and are completely removed during sintering.

Trace impurities such as hafnium oxide (HfO²), which naturally accompanies zirconium in zircon sand (ZrSiO&sup4;), are also unavoidable in production. Because hafnium behaves almost identically to zirconium, complete separation is impractical — and at typical levels HfO² has minimal influence on clinical performance.

Why Composition Control Matters at Kyozir

Understanding composition is the first step to choosing the right block for each indication — from high-strength posterior bridges to highly aesthetic anterior crowns. As a manufacturer, Kyozir controls composition through a precise and stable production process, ensuring consistent quality and performance across every batch. The result is zirconia with high strength, stable density and excellent milling performance for CAD/CAM systems, available in monochromatic and multilayer zirconia discs for laboratories worldwide.
